Weymouth Rec Soccer Description by Division

Our Recrational soccer program offers varioud divisions for different ages. From as early as Under 5 through Under 15 your player can play soccer in our town based rec program for many years.  With the excption of our Kickers division, all divisions and teams offer one practice per week and one game per week on Saturday’s.  Kickers do not practice during the week. All teams will play a minimum of eight games during the regular season. There are no playoffs in Kickers, U6 and U8. The U8 season culminates in a Jamboree. The U10 divisions and above seasons will end with playoffs. All games are played on the turf fields at Lovell Field in Weymouth. Practice times are offered to coaches for our U6-U15 divisions Lovell Field (U8-U15) during specific times. Our volunteer coaches, however, can opt to practice at a date/tiem and location convenient to their schedule.

Player Needs:

  • Soccer ball (Kickers, U6 and U8-size 3, U10 through U12: size 4, U15-size 5)
  • Shin guards
  • Soccer socks (socks need to cover shin guards)
  • Soccer Cleats (optional but recommended)

Little Kickers

Kickers’ Academy was created to introduce our youngest players (U5) to the game of soccer. During these co-ed sessions we focus on soccer skills through games like freeze tag and keep away, that will get increasingly more challenging as the season goes on. Each session will end with a scrimmage where small groups will play against each other on small fields with pug nets and generally no goalies. The program is meant to give our youngest players a fun introduction to the game where there is no pressure to win. Rather we look to congratulate individual accomplishments in an effort to promote confidence on the soccer field.

In addition to our main coach, we have high school players/students that help out. We start each session with a "coach" taking a small group to a section of the field where every player has a ball at their feet. They then start with a quick introduction and get moving quickly. We try to keep a low player to coach ratio. It ends up being about 6:1 or 8:1. Your child will play every Saturday for one hour. The Kickers Sessions will be run at two or three different time a week (based on registrations) and will be published as part of that season's schedule. In past seasons those times have been 8am, 9:10am, 10:20 am. Your child will be assigned to one of those times and will be expected to attend at that time.

WHAT DOES YOUR CHILD NEED? Your child should wear outdoor cleats and shin guards with soccer socks to cover them. Sneakers are okay, but cleats provide better traction. We will supply a shirt – but please remember that it can be very chilly at the field so layered dressing is suggested. Please bring a water for your child. If you choose to buy your child a ball – Size 3 is the appropriate size ball for this age group. You do not need to bring it to the field, but if you want to,  w suggest that you put your name on it so that it won’t get lost.

Under 6 (U6)

The U6 format is designed to be 4 v 4 with no goalies and utilizes a continuous play model. Continuous play eliminates all kick-offs (other than to start the game), goal kicks, corner kicks and throw-ins. Each time a goal is scored a coach will roll a ball onto the field and play will restart. Coaches/Parents will be responsible for retrieving balls and returning them to the coaches’ that will be on the field to help with the flow of the game and to minimize slowdowns in play. The goal of this level is to give children an opportunity to get more “touches on the ball”, so frequent stops in play are counterproductive. Our goal is for the children to develop skill and a “comfort” with the ball. Increased touches on the ball has been proven to achieve this goal. Research and statistics tell us that this format will almost double the children’s touches on the ball, effectively giving them 2 seasons for the price of one! Children at this age want more fun and less rules! There will be plenty of time to teach restarts and other rules to them at the next phase of their development. Skill and fun are more important! Ball Size = 3

Under 8 (U8)

The U8 Format is a whole field (appropriately sized) game. The game is played 6 v6 with a designated Goalie. The game will be played in quarters with time being called after each for a water break and player change. The game will have an official and there is no Off Sides Rule. All other rules apply. As a part of WYS Recreational Soccer our By-Laws state that every player present at the game will play 2 quarters before any one player can play 3. Under 12 (U12)
